It seems a contradiction in terms that a business that makes its living from fitting out office space has recently taken up membership in one of London’s leading flexible co-working clubs. But that’s exactly what Orchard have just done.
Why? Well with our head office nestled in Essex and, in reality, only a handful of employees needing a London-base, a satellite office in the capital with it’s ever increasing rents and rates – just seemed a little….wasteful. With the majority of us becoming increasingly mobile in terms of how we can do business, co-working becomes an attractive alternative for the nomadic worker – no more coffee shop meetings or site-based catch ups – we’ve swapped the skanky for swanky!
And we’re not alone. London is the global leader when it comes to co-working spaces with demand at a record high and still increasing. Reports show that flexible workspace operators now account for 4 out of the top 10 takers of space in London, alongside Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook (source: Cushman & Wakefield Co-working 2018). Add to this that some predictions show that by 2020 50% of the UK’s workforce will be freelancing and you get the feeling these figures aren’t going to be dropping off anytime soon.
So here we are in The Clubhouse (choice of 4 locations from West End to City) with it’s never ending supply of caffeine and apples, bank of blue velvet sofas and surrounded by a myriad of professionals and wondering what took us so long! It’s a far cry from the dusty site office – that’s for sure!
